Our mission has always been to build a robust community, and to us, community means inclusivity. That’s why we are so thrilled to have the first cheer class for ALN children in the local area at our brand new Sycamore Centre. Cheer United Cymru meet every Saturday morning, which is a Community CheerABILITIES class for ALN children and teens.

Creating inclusive spaces for children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) is essential for their development, confidence, and social integration. Many children with ALN face barriers in traditional learning and recreational environments, making it crucial to provide specialised groups that cater to their unique needs. Cheer United Cymru a new ALN group, run by Emily at The Sycamore Centre in Ty Sign is stepping up to offer exactly that.

Why ALN Groups Matter

ALN groups provide vital support to children and young people who may struggle with traditional educational or social settings. These groups help by:

  • Encouraging Social Interaction – Many children with ALN find socialising challenging. Structured groups create safe and supportive spaces for them to build friendships and develop social skills.
  • Boosting Confidence and Independence – Participation in activities designed for their needs helps children feel more capable and confident.
  • Providing Specialist Support – ALN groups often include trained staff who understand the specific needs of children with learning differences, ensuring they receive the right support.
  • Reducing Isolation for Families – Parents and caregivers of children with ALN often face challenges finding accessible activities. Dedicated groups provide a community for both children and their families.

Meet Lissy

Lissy joined cheer this weekend for the first time, and instantly felt at home. Lissy is awaiting a diagnosis but is non-verbal and as a result it has been difficult for her to find classes that can cater to her additional needs. “Unlike her sisters and brothers, who enjoy swimming, gymnastics and ballroom dancing; it has been really difficult to find something Lissy will enjoy,” her Dad, Tony explained. ” We need a welcoming space for Lissy, where there will be understanding for her doing an activity her way, to make as little or as much noise as she wants but most importantly feel comfortable. At Cheer United Lissy found that space!”
